AirPrint Not Working? Here's How to Fix It

AirPrint is usually effortless โ€” until it isn't. Whether your iPhone can't see the printer, gets stuck on "Contacting Printer", or spits out blank pages, this guide walks through every fix that actually works, in order of how likely it is to solve your problem.

Quick diagnostic: where are you stuck?

1Confirm both devices are on the same WiFi

This is the #1 cause of AirPrint problems by far. Your iPhone and printer must be on the exact same WiFi network โ€” not just the same router, the same network name (SSID).

2Make sure your printer actually supports AirPrint

Not every printer with WiFi supports AirPrint. Check Apple's official list at apple.com/airprint. If your model isn't there, you can't use AirPrint โ€” use the manufacturer's app instead (HP Smart, Canon PRINT, Epson iPrint, Brother iPrint&Scan).

3Restart the printer (properly)

"Turn it off and on again" solves about 40% of AirPrint issues, but only if done right:

  1. While the printer is on, unplug the power cable from the back of the printer.
  2. Wait 60 seconds (don't skip this โ€” capacitors need to drain).
  3. Plug it back in and turn the printer on.
  4. Wait until the WiFi light is steady, not blinking.

4Restart your iPhone

The iPhone's Print Center daemon occasionally gets stuck. A normal restart (slide to power off, then power on) clears it. Don't just sleep/wake โ€” actually restart.

5Force-close Print Center

If your iPhone is stuck on "Contacting Printer":

  1. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and pause in the middle.
  2. Find the Print Center card (it only appears during an active print job).
  3. Swipe it upward to force-close.
  4. Try printing again.

6Update your printer firmware

Printer makers regularly release firmware updates that fix AirPrint bugs. Open your printer's web interface (type its IP address into a browser) or use the manufacturer app to check for updates. Many older HP and Canon printers needed firmware updates in 2023โ€“2025 to keep working with iOS 17+.

7Disable VPN and Private Relay

If you have an iCloud+ subscription, iCloud Private Relay can break local network discovery โ€” including AirPrint. Temporarily disable it:

8Check for router issues

Common router-level culprits:

9Update iOS to the latest version

Apple fixes AirPrint bugs in nearly every iOS point release. Check Settings โ†’ General โ†’ Software Update and install any pending updates.

10Reset network settings (last resort)

If nothing else works, reset your iPhone's network settings: Settings โ†’ General โ†’ Transfer or Reset iPhone โ†’ Reset โ†’ Reset Network Settings. You'll need to re-enter your WiFi password, but this clears corrupted network state that can break AirPrint.

11Use a printer app as a fallback

If AirPrint is still broken after everything above, your printer's official app uses a different network protocol and often works when AirPrint doesn't. Download your manufacturer's app, connect, and print from there while you continue troubleshooting AirPrint.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does AirPrint work on WiFi but not on cellular?

AirPrint requires both devices to be on the same local network. Cellular data bypasses your local network entirely, so AirPrint can't reach your printer. Connect to WiFi first.

Can I use AirPrint with a USB-only printer?

No. AirPrint requires a network connection (WiFi or Ethernet). For USB-only printers, share the printer from a Mac or PC and print through that shared printer.

Why does my printer show up sometimes and not others?

This is almost always a weak WiFi signal or interference. Move the printer closer to the router, or connect it via Ethernet if your printer supports it โ€” this gives the most reliable AirPrint experience.
